Super World Indie Tune Of The Day: Rosa Ama could calm an angry llama.

Super World Indie Tune Of The Day 13.08.2019: “Oku” by Rosa Ama.

Good friend of SWIT David Harks was in touch recently about Rosa Ama, his new collaboration with Belgian DJ/Producer/Composer Vicente Milioto da Palma (aka Vhyce). As we’ve come to expect from David, “Oku” (Kitsuné Musique) is bliss personified. It’s music that wraps itself around you, a warm embrace as the night comes falling from the sky. Just a few seconds in and you realise he has worked his transcendent spell yet again. It’s a soft kiss to cool the fevered brow. As William Congreve famously said: “Music has charms to soothe a savage breast. Music has the power to enchant even the roughest of people”. So forget for a little while the ongoing car crash of Brexit, the existential awfulness of Trump etc. etc. and turn your mind to all the beauty that surrounds you.

As the lads say themselves “Rosa Ama debut with there first release OKU the title defines to represent a gateway into there world of soft disco-pop lead by lyrical imagery, deep synth nostalgia and a yearning to step into the dusk..OKU leaves the listener to dream up there own imaginations just as the title of the song does, what is OKU ? To us, OKU is a play on sound rather than the meaning of the word. We want to give the listener a moment in there lives to fade out of reality, switch on the song and psyche out, Oku is that switch to relax and dream..Lo-fi psych infused pop lit on a wave of otherworldly lyricism, enveloped repetition and soul. Rosa Ama heralds the sounds of house, R&B, and disco samples as the musical progressions drift through melodic messages, love notes and esoteric stories…spoken at dusk”.

Oku (Ebkuo, Ekpwo, Ukfwo, Bvukoo, Kuɔ) is also a Grassfields Bantu language of Cameroon. But that’s not important right now.

Vhyce also did this rather marvellous mix inspired by their first single – “focussing on songs (mostly coming from albums) rather than club tracks. Trying to find what could be the connections between these and our release. Making a selection that you can listen at home while still being danceable and fun.” I can honestly say I’m pirouetting around the room in a very ungainly manner. I love checking new music and I’ve never heard any of these tunes before, superb!
