Sin Fang, Sóley and Örvar Smárason (of múm) embarked on a project in 2017 to release a track a month for the year. Now, just released on Morr Music, the 12 tracks have formed the LP “Team Dreams”. It combines the individual strengths of the three acclaimed musicians, blending folk sensibilities with futuristic pop beats. We featured a number of the songs here on SWIT and “Tennis” made our top ten of 2017. We caught up with Sin Fang to get his thoughts on the record (and pineapples).
Thanks so much for agreeing to do an interview with us, we love “Team Dreams”. Tell me when you set out on the collaboration did you expect to produce such a coherent LP at the end of it?
Hi, thanks! I’m glad you like it! No, we didn’t really know what to expect. I definitely thought we would do more weird stuff haha.. or more varied genres. but in the end, there really wasn’t any song that I was not happy with after we mastered it. kind of crazy.
Was it hard to get the time each month to work on the songs?
Sometimes, we were all doing other stuff as well but we always had it in the back of our minds.
Was there any month you thought “Shit, we are running out of time and we have nothing?”
Haha, fortunately, there were 3 songwriters in this band so we had a pretty big bag of demos to choose from each month.
Did the seasons/time of year affect the mood of the group and the song you produced?
I don’t know. it will be interesting to go back and listen with that in mind. I still haven’t listened to the whole thing through since we finished it.
Do you have a favourite track?
Maybe “random haiku generator” or “wasted”.
What’s going on with Iceland in terms of having all these brilliant creatives? Like per head of population you must be a creative hotspot that can be seen from outer space. Any thoughts?
Haha, I don’t know.. I think people inspire each other here and it’s all very close. you can see some person you admire artistically at the same bar/store you go to and think to yourself “if that person can make great art why shouldn’t I if I work hard on it?
What’s the best new band/artist you’ve heard recently?
I don’t know how new it is, but stuff I’ve been listening to lately: Sean Nicholas Savage, Soft Hair, Dinner and more. Here’s a handy 14-hour Spotify playlist of music I like:
14 hours later, with ears bleeding, I got to finish the rest of the article…..
What question would you like to be asked that you never are? And what would be your answer?
Is pineapple a good pizza topping? yes, yes it is.
What did you want to be when you were a little boy?
A few things, tennis player, football player or Michael Jackson.
While we’re here, this made our Top 10 in 2016 too – class, innit?
