SWIT’s Long Player of The Week: _Xantastic by Darren Cross

High Anxiety

Our LP of the week is _Xantastic by Darren Cross. Darren was a founding member of Gerling and is one half of folk noir duo Jep and Dep. _Xantastic is his first solo LP – and what a way to start, this is a beautiful, understated modern folk record. Sure, it’s high on anxiety about our present and what the future may hold, there’s sadness too but when you listen to “And The New York Rain Came Down” you could almost be walking right into the cover of “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan” in some virtual reality playground. The songwriting is raw, yet full of craft and the low-key use of electronics to underscore the arrangements lifts it even further up, and out, of the ordinary. Hell, this is what Neil Young’s “Trans” could have sounded like if he hadn’t made such a monumental b******* of it.
