Knock Me Out are a French quartet, namely Nathalie on vocals, Florent on drums, Alex on guitar and Andreas on bass. We featured the acoustic version of thier excellent tune “No” as one of our tunes of the day a while back and we caught up with Nathalie to find out a bit more about her and the group.
Tell me a bit about the band.
Today I like to say that Knock Me Out is a french pop rock band with exhilarating airwaves. I think we have an energetic rock sound melded with electro-ambiances and poppy melodies. I started this project in 2007, and for many years it was more a punk rock band in a classical power trio way. But for the past 2 years we have been 4 and the style changed a bit, but the spirit is still the same.
What was the first tune you loved, and why?
I’m going to go very far. My mother told me that when I was very small (3 or 4), I was often asking to put the vinyl disc of Elvis Presley, and then I used to sit close to the speaker to listen closely. I was also saying that I loved the sound of his voice. So I suppose this is the first artist and songs I loved !
Are the songs a group effort and if so do you always agree on musical direction?
I have written all the songs we have now, music and lyrics. For many years the line up was changing quite often and it was difficult to settle down and write songs with guys you did know if they were going to be here in 6 months. Now it’s different, we’ve been playing together for 2 years, and these weeks for example we’re mixing ideas with Andreas (the bass player) to write new tracks. And so yes, so far we agree on the musical direction.
What is your favorite song/piece of music that you’ve written and why?
It’s probably “Super Héros”. I love the strength and lightness emerging from this song, and even after several years, the lyrics keep making me smile.
How do you know when a tune you’ve written is complete?
Most of times it’s pretty obvious. I make changes and changes, and suddenly it’s like everything is falling into place.
What song by another artist do you wish you had written and why?
Haha I’ve said this a lot “oh I wish I had written this song it’s so great”. Well the last song I said this about is “Lazy Eye” by Silversun Pickups. I just love the way the atmospheric ambiance settles in from the first riff, and the way everything rises and gets more and more intense till the end of the song.
What artist(s) has been your biggest influence and in what way?
Punk rock bands for sure! I learned to play guitar with Blink 182, Green Day, Sum 41 so when I started to write my own songs they naturally were a reference for me.
Name a song that makes you happy and why does it have that effect?
“Subtract You” from Zebrahead. It’s got the energy and the attitude I love. The whole album (Playmate Of The Year) has that effect, it’s like injecting vitamins into your brain.
What is the best new band that you’ve heard recently?
Against The Current. Cool melodies, rock music and electronics, all I love these days!
What’s your favourite radio station?
I listen to a French web station, La Grosse Radio, who cover a lot of less well-known bands (just like us lol), and I love to hear what bands like to do or are trying to do at the moment.
What song would you like to have played at your funeral?
I don’t know ! Maybe I just don’t care, it will be too late for me to listen to it anyway.
What question would you like to be asked that you never are? (and what would be your answer?)
What is my thought of the day! And my answer is “Love people, not things. Use things, not people.” I believe this is THE problem on Earth. And my second thought is that I’m going to a pub tonight and have some nachos and beer and I feel happy for this.
What’s next for Knock Me Out?
Lot’s of gigs ! And we are writing new songs, and we are working on a new video. So we’ll have some news very soon !
