We’ve featured the legendary The Chills a few times already on a couple of classic tracks and also the coveted New Tune of the Day back in October
We’re delighted that Martin from the band took time out to answer a few questions for us. (We’re huge fans of the group.)
What was the first tune you loved?
Guantanamera by the Sandpipers. It had a sad but exotic quality that caught my attention as a child.
What is your favourite song/piece of music that you’ve written?
‘Submarine Bells’. I was able to capture some reasonably complex music I heard in my head and, with quite a bit of work, the lyrics came together beautifully.
What song by another artist do you wish you had written?
‘Good Vibrations’ by Brian Wilson. That song was such a ground-breaking achievement and still has a beautiful atmosphere.
The artist that has influenced you the most ?
David Bowie. So much determination and the courage to change and confound critics and fans alike and one of the best song-writers of the ’70s and onwards.
Name a song that makes you smile.
‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams. That song will still works many years from now.
What is the best new band that you’ve heard?
Grimes. I like her freedom and imagination.
What’s your favourite radio station?
RNZ National. It’s nice to be treated like an intelligent adult and also hear some great music alongside the very good interviews etc.
Who would win a fight between a drummer and a bass player, and why?
The drummer. More co-ordination, probably better all-round fitness and most likely the more psychotic of the two.
What song would you like to have played at your funeral?
‘Til I Die’ by the Beach Boys. A rare lyric by Brian Wilson and it is very poignant.
A question you wished we asked you and what would be the answer?
Would you like this pass for a year’s free travel anywhere in the world with a friend? ANSWER: Yes.
Thanks a lot Martin and of course Scott for arranging the interview. The Chills are currently playing shows in New Zealand/Australia but are hoping to be back touring the U.S. and Europe in the not too distant future.
We wish them the very best for 2016
Check out The Chills playlist below comprising the above tracks and the setlist from their show at Max Watt’s House of Music Melbourne on Friday night last (Jan 15th).
