I came across this completely by accident. I was looking for a recording of Dylan Thomas reading “A Childhood Christmas In Wales” and I found an album by that name with a lot of other tracks too – ” A Year Without A Santa Claus” is on there and is actually a reading of the book, written by Phyllis McGinley and published in 1957. This children’s story is a beautiful long-form verse, an ode to the wonder of Santa Claus.
Of course, it wasn’t read by Dylan Thomas, it’s a recording by Carol Channing* (not credited). She does a fantastic job – I think it’s wonderful, my kids adore it. It isn’t the original recording of the book, I ‘m pretty sure that was done by Boris Karloff but, to my mind, the Carol Channing reading is far superior. I’ve included both here so you can make up your own mind.
*This version seems to have been removed from YouTube so I’ve moved the Boris version up front, still fine on Spotify and Deezer (update 11/12/2015 23:43)
Many of you will have seen the Rankin/Bass stop-motion animated TV classic (based on the book). It was originally broadcast on the 10th of December , 1974 on ABC in the US. I found the full show on Daily Motion (or its there now, at time of publishing, but it may disappear as it often does on YouTube).
You can watch it here –
